Stump grinding and stump removal in Warner Robins and Houston County

The front lawn of a brick ranch house with a round mound of fresh wood chips where a stump was ground out, and an old weathered stump still standing a few yards away

A stump grinder cuts a stump down below the grass with a spinning wheel of teeth, leaving a mound of chips you can rake out, fill and seed. The first stump often runs $120 to $400, and each extra stump on the same visit $30 to $60.

Two side views of a tree stump. Before: the stump stands above the lawn with roots spreading into the soil. After grinding: a spinning toothed wheel has chewed the stump down below ground level, the hole is filled with wood chips, and the main roots are left in the soil to rot.BEFOREAFTER GRINDINGstumproots spread out through the soiltoothed wheelchips fillthe holeground levelmain roots stay and rot slowly
Grinding chews a stump down below the lawn and leaves the hole full of chips; the big roots stay in the ground and rot over time. Pulling the whole stump out takes a bigger machine and leaves a hole to fill, which is why most yards get ground instead.

Grind it or pull it out?

For lawns, grinding. For anything that will be built on, pulling.

Grinding is faster and barely touches the lawn. Pulling digs up more ground but gets out the bulk of the wood, which matters under a slab or drive, where a rotting root ball would leave a soft spot.

How far down does a grinder go?

Most jobs go 4 to 6 inches below the ground. Ask for 6 to 8 inches if new sod or seed is going over the spot. Taking out the whole stump and the larger roots can go to about 18 inches and costs more.

Don't plan a new tree right in the old hole; the old roots are still there. Set it a few feet to one side. The grinder also needs a little room to swing, so move edging, pots and rocks back first.

What if I just leave the stump?

It will rot eventually. HomeGuide puts that at 3 to 10 years, and a rotting stump attracts fungi and insects while it goes. Some hardwood stumps also keep sending up sprouts.

As the stump and roots break down underground, the soil over them settles. Expect to add a little topsoil to a ground-out spot a season or two later.

Do I have to call 811 before stump grinding in Georgia?

Yes. Georgia's dig law counts stump removal as excavation, and a grinder cuts several inches into the soil where cable, irrigation and gas service lines often run shallow.

A Georgia 811 request is free and needs at least 3 business days before the work. The utilities only mark their own lines, so point out private ones, such as a line to a shed or a sprinkler system, to the crew yourself.

How much does stump grinding cost in Warner Robins?

Rough 2026 stump grinding costs (HomeGuide, national)
ItemRough cost
First stump$120 to $400
Each extra stump, same visit$30 to $60
By width$2 to $6 per inch of diameter
Very large stumps$300 to $800 each
Minimum charge$80 to $160
Chip cleanup and haul-off$2 to $4 per inch, extra

Width at ground level sets the price. Hard oak, a stump behind a narrow gate, and big surface roots add time. Getting every stump done in one visit is much cheaper per stump than one at a time.

When a whole lot is being cleared, stumps are usually part of the clearing price instead.

Common questions

What should I do with the chips?

Rake most of them out and use them as mulch, then fill the hole with topsoil, tamp it down and seed it. A hole full of chips sinks and stays bare.

How long does grinding take?

Anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours a stump, depending on its size, the wood and how easy it is to reach.

Do pine stumps sprout back?

Pines generally don't resprout from the stump. Many hardwoods do; clip or mow the sprouts and they usually quit.
