Forestry mulching in Warner Robins and Houston County

A forestry mulcher grinds brush, vines and small trees where they stand and spreads them back over the ground as mulch. Nothing is piled, burned or trucked away, and the big pines and oaks you want stay put. Small lots can be a few hundred dollars; several acres run into the thousands.

What jobs is forestry mulching good for?
- Opening up the woods: The understory comes out and the good trees stay, so a wooded lot is usable again.
- Fence lines and field edges: Brush and sweetgum saplings creeping into a pasture get ground back to the wire.
- Paths and firebreaks: A lane wide enough for a truck or tractor through thick growth.
- Privet thickets: A wall of privet is flattened in hours instead of cut and dragged by hand.
It's the wrong tool for a building site. A slab, pad or driveway needs the stumps and roots out and the topsoil stripped, which is land clearing.
Should I mulch land that has cogongrass?
Not before it's treated. Cogongrass is an invasive grass that spreads underground through a dense mat of runners, and the Georgia Forestry Commission had found it in more than 78 Georgia counties by 2025. The Commission's advice is to avoid mowing or disturbing a patch, because that can help it spread.
If you think you have it, report it to the Forestry Commission, which offers landowners free herbicide treatment, and tell the mulching crew before they start.
Will mulching get rid of privet and kudzu?
It knocks them flat, but the roots live. Privet and kudzu both sit on the Georgia Forestry Commission's list of the state's worst invasive plants, and both regrow after mulching.
The upside is that regrowth comes back evenly and low, so a follow-up spray or a season of mowing finishes the job much more easily than fighting a full thicket.
Why mulch instead of burning?
Houston County is under Georgia's summer outdoor burning ban from May 1 through September 30, and the rest of the year burning still needs a Forestry Commission permit or notification. Mulching skips the calendar, the smoke near houses and the burn piles.
Mulching usually doesn't need a land-disturbance permit for ordinary lots, since the ground isn't stripped. Stay out of the 25-foot buffer along creek banks unless the county says otherwise.
How much does forestry mulching cost?
| Growth | Rough cost per hour |
|---|---|
| Underbrush to small trees | $125 to $200 |
| Brush, trees and some grading | $150 to $300 |
| Underbrush up to mature trees | $200 to $275 |
| Heavy brush with large mature trees | $300 to $400 |
By the acre, HomeGuide puts typical mulching at $400 to $800, up to $2,000 for thick growth, with $400 to $600 minimums. Angi's 2026 survey is higher, at $1,000 to $2,500 an acre. A skid-steer mulcher clears roughly 1 to 3 acres a day.
Some crews add $150 to $300 to haul the machine out. Ask whether stumps are ground flush or left a few inches tall.
Common questions
Is mulching the same as clearing?
No. Mulching grinds growth in place and leaves the stumps and roots. Clearing for a house or drive pulls them and strips the ground.
What happens to the mulch?
It stays on the ground, holds the sandy soil in place, and breaks down over a few years.
How big a tree can it take?
Brush and small trees are its strength. Bigger trees take more time per hour, and the biggest are usually felled first or left standing.
